Te Kōpua o Hiku

Client: Auckland Council (Public Art)
Artists: Janine Williams, Shannon Novak
Lighting Engineer: Morgann Le Bars / Norwich Group
Location: Auckland, New Zealand
Year: 2025

Te Kōpua o Hiku reconnects the walking and cycling loop around Panmure Basin, incorporating an integrated public artwork by Janine Williams and Shannon Novak. We worked closely with the artists and lighting engineer Morgann Le Bars to develop the concept and technical design for the bridge's responsive lighting.

Our bespoke control system uses live data from an on-site weather station to translate the strength and direction of the wind into continuous movement across the bridge. The lighting also changes through seasonal and daily cycles, allowing its character to evolve with the conditions of the basin.

We developed the generative behaviour and data integration, and commissioned and refined the system on site. The final outcome reflects the artists' vision for a work connected to place and environment, realised through close collaboration across art, lighting and technology.
