Muru Giligu (Martin Place Metro)

Client: Xenian / Macquarie Group
Lighting Design: Electrolight
Location: Martin Place, Sydney, Australia
Year: 2024

Muru Giligu is a 67-metre pedestrian tunnel connecting 1 Elizabeth with Martin Place Metro, conceived as an immersive environment for changing light, sound and interactive experiences.

Working with Xenian, Macquarie and Electrolight, we developed the bespoke control system integrating lighting throughout the tunnel and 32-channel spatial audio with an array of motion sensors. The system combines programmed and generative behaviours with real-time proximity data, allowing light and sound to respond dynamically as people move through the space. Electrolight’s design uses concealed linear lighting to turn the curved concrete surfaces into a continuous dynamic canvas.

We worked alongside the project’s artists and creative teams to realise the foundational experiences, developing the programming, spatial mapping and interactive behaviours needed to bring each work into the physical space.

Muru Giligu was designed from the outset to accommodate an evolving programme of temporary commissions and activations. We remain involved in supporting the site and developing new artistic and commercial experiences, from short-term interventions through to longer-running installations.
